You might want to be aware of the initiative the community are taking to provide an opportunity for young people to engage in boxing.
The Heart of Hayling Island Boxing Club will come under the auspices of the Hayling Island Lions who are funding it. We have now managed to recruit sufficient volunteers to take part in the initial one day training session for boxing coaches which will take place on Sunday 16 December, at Hayling Island Community Centre from 0900 hours until 1600 hours.
We are extremely fortunate that the training for our coaches will be undertaken by Quinton Shillingford MBE, who coaches Team GB and is the founder of Heart of Portsmouth Boxing Club. Our recruit coaches comprise police officers, ex-police officers, teachers, fire officers, a chiropractitioner and a mental health worker. If you know anyone who may be interested in training to coach, please contact me: wendylcoates@btinternet.com . We need both male and female coaches. One of the teachers is a trained safeguarding officer to whom concerns about any of the youngsters can be referred. Youngsters who show promise will have special support from Heart of Portsmouth.
We will be giving more info as we go. The concept is that the Academy will not turn a boxer away, if they do not have the £2 for the session they can just make a donation of whatever they can afford. This means also we need to fund raise to make sure no one misses out, so if like me you can't join in as a coach we will still need you. Any ideas on fundraising welcomed. We have some great people already volunteering to train as coaches so think about it.
If you do know a youngster who would like to learn to box, book now for one hour of non-contact boxing tuition a week at HICC aimed at achieving the GB Boxing Awards Preliminary-Bronze (6 month course based on one hour per week). Classes are every Wednesday from 9/1/19 as follows:
1630hrs - 1730hrs: U17s 1730hrs - 1830hrs: U12s 1830hrs - 1930hrs: Ladies only (all ages)
Semi-contact sparring classes will commence on alternate nights at Mengham Park Community Centre as of June/July 2019 so students can achieve Silver-Platinum Awards.
